Vol. 2 – A fili contati

A fili contati (Counted Thread Work) is done on even weave fabric without a “pattern”: the embroiderer counts the number of threads in the design, usually according to a repertoire of antique stitches which have been part of our embroidery tradition for centuries. The manual includes diagrams and scans of finished projects for reference, produced by students at my School, to aid understanding of the suggested themes.

Satin stitch is superimposed on the weave of the fabric to give a more consistent result. It can be used by itself or in conjunction with other stitches, particularly to decorate or finish various types of work. It can also be used with drawn thread and reticello techniques.

The first edition of Volume 2, A fili contati (Counted Thread Work), with 64 pages, came out in May 2005 in Italian and English; the positive sales of this edition led to the publication of a second, also in two languages, in August of the same year. The third edition (January 2008) was also in French; and the book continued to be popular, to the extent that it was reprinted just over a year later (May 2009).

The manual describes the main stitches, which are then used in the numerous embroidery projects I suggest, accompanied by diagrams and scans to bring the materials and designs to life.
